چکیده
Abstract Although climate impacts of ruminant agriculture are a major concern worldwide, using policy instruments to force grazing farms out the livestock industry may diminish opportunities produce nutritious food without exacerbating food-feed competition for fertile and accessible land resources. Here, we present new set quantitative evidence demonstrate that, per unit overall nutrient value supplied by given commodity, demand suitable human-edible crop production is considerably smaller under systems than monogastric systems, consistently so at both farm regional scales. We also that imposition naïvely designed “red meat tax” has potential invite socioeconomic losses far greater its environmental benefits, due largely induced misallocation resources national scale. Our results reiterate risk inherent in an excessively climate-focused debate on role human society call more multidimensional approaches sustainability assessment draw better-balanced packages.

a substantial global increase in the demand for food of animal origin, while also aggravating the competition between crops and livestock (increasing cropping areas and reducing rangelands). The livestock revolution 1 is stretching the capacity of existing production, but it is also exacerbating environmental problems. Therefore, while it is necessary to satisfy consumer demand, improve nutriti...

A framework for the integration of poultry and fish production in the tropics and sub-tropics is proposed. Poultry may be integrated with fish culture in several ways and benefits extend to both. Both poultry production and processing wastes have value as nutrient inputs to fish and the water used for fish culture can be used for evaporative cooling of poultry and fertilization of crops. The co...

The idea of agroecosystem analysis has at least some roots in the frustration of researchers who saw their technological innovations too often ignored by farmers (Conway 1985;1986;1987). This led to a “systems” approach manifested in a variety of ways, but generally with a strong measure of farmer participation. The “Conway school” and most other systematic approaches to analyzing agroecosystem...

Organic farming which experienced a constant rise over the last two decades is a system based on sustainability and on a concept tending towards functional integrity. Legislation as well as the wish to produce separately from conventional farming raise the question whether organic farming should be conducted completely apart from conventional farming or not. This paper discusses the aspects tha...
